Final Fantasy XIV - A challenger to World of Warcraft?

It has been a week now since the official release of Final Fantasy XIV, although if you preordered the collectors edition, you could have begun playing on September 22nd. Many games have been toted as competition to WoW's now 12 million subscribers. ( http://pc.ign.com/articles/112/1126366p1.html ) Games such as Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, and Aion come to mind, but none came close to denting WoW's stranglehold on the MMORPG market. Can Square Enix's second attempt at an MMORPG do it?

From what I have seen, and played, I do not think it will. The controls feel amazingly stiff and clunky. There is very little direction for new players telling them what they should do, or what they can do. The minimalist user interface lets the player see a large amount of the screen, but does not allow for fast retrieval of needed information, like party members' health points.

Not everything is bad though. For one, the game looks great if you have a computer that can handle turning up the graphics. The class system is great and eliminates the need to make alternate characters if the player wants to play a different class. The character customization is also quite impressive.

What it comes down to is how fun is the game. By yourself, the game is more frustrating than it is fun, but if you have friends to play with, I'm sure fun can be had. I would say to pass on this game. WoW's next expansion, Cataclysm, releasing December 7th, 2010, will surely bring back a lot of players that left to give Final Fantasy XIV a chance.

  1. Other than Wii Fit I am very much out of touch with any type of video games. What is Worlds of Warcraft about? I heard my cousin and his friends talking about it. They were talk about how they stay up all night and play it. Can you give me some insight on the game?

  2. World of Warcraft is an online role playing game where players create characters of varying classes and races. Players then level up usually by doing quests either alone, or with other players that they know. Throughout the players leveling experience, they can enter into battlegrounds, which are zones in which players for each of the two WoW factions (Horde and Alliance) battle each other. Depending on the players level, they can also group with similarly leveled players and clear dungeons for loot and experience.

The game is more focused towards the max level content though. There are more places to PvP (Player vs. Player, where players of one faction battle against players of the other faction.), and much more PvE (Player vs. Environment, where players group together in order to slay computer monsters in dungeons for better gear for their player.)

That is just a basic overview of the game. There is a ton more that can be said about it though. More information can be found here ( http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/beginners/index.html ).

  3. For some reason, I doubt Final Fantasy would even be good as an MMORPG, since it has always been a turn-based RPG, which I dislike, since it is not a very fair system of play. Maybe, it will do really well though

  4. Nice! I'm actually playing this game. I have played my fair share of MMO's. This new Final Fantasy is basically Square Enix's second MMO. The first one being Final Fantasy XI which has done really well. There is no way this will beat WoW as far as subscribers since not everyone can upgrade their PC to play this. WoW can run on older machines when this new game can't. Overall the game has been fun but I haven't put much time into it since being out of town.
